Appliqué

Appliqué is a venerable and distinguished sewing technique that has been used for generations.  It is a method referred to for attaching pieces onto a background.  The pieces can be of a multitude of mediums such as cotton, silk, lace, wool, flannel and other types of fabric; paper, wood, vinyl or leather pieces; or any other medium that can be used as an overlay onto a surface. These pieces can be cut by hand or a template, molded or formed. 

In the world of sewing and quilting, Appliqué most often will be stitched to the background by hand or machine with various techniques such as needle turn, blind hem, and invisible, satin or blanket stitch.
